Los Angeles (CBS) - Christmas came early this year for one Santa Monica homeless man.

Willie Bell met Dr. Paul Dougherty at the Santa Monica Civic Center on Thanksgiving Day while Dr. Dougherty was performing free eye examinations along with free eye glasses to the homeless and needy.

Willie said that he was homeless because of his inability to see well which forced him out of work.

After an examination Dr. Dougherty, of the country's leading eye care physicians, revealed that Willie was legally blind due to a severe case of nearsightedness.

Dr. Dougherty said that Willie is beyond Lasik surgery so he will perform a new VISIAN ICL (Implantable Collamer Lens), an implanted contact lens that will allow him to see clearly for the first time ever.

According to Willie, if he could see without using his thick eye glasses, he could then "die a happy man".
